Frequently asked questions

What is St. Catharine’s Giving Day?

A single 36-hour digital giving initiative in which we ask the entire Catz global community to come together to support our students and celebrate and reflect on their time at St. Catharine’s.

With thousands of pounds to unlock in matched and challenge funding, it’s a day like no other and your gift will have even more impact.

It will be a transformational day of giving and it’s all about what we can achieve together.

St. Catharine’s Giving Day will take place on 26-27 November. We’re excited for you to join us!

What difference will my donation make?

Your support will strengthen the College community by supporting our students, improving access to St Catharine’s and funding more teaching and research opportunities across the College. All gifts, of every size, will make a real difference. With thousands to unlock in matched and challenge funds, gifts go even further than usual. Having a large number of donors encourages others to support us too, so we would love as many people as possible in our community to participate in St Catharine’s Giving Day.

How can I make my gift?

We’d love you to join in on 26-27 November, but we understand that your schedule might not allow you to participate during the Giving Day itself.

Yes! If you’ve chosen not to make your gift anonymous, you can take a look at the donor wall to see your name.

Why is my payment not going through?

We’re sorry that you’re having difficulty making your gift. Common errors include incorrect card details or the postcode/zipcode is incorrect or doesn’t match the address linked to your card.

Please double-check the above before you contact us.

If you continue to have problems making your gift please email us at alumni.office@caths.cam.ac.uk. You can also call us during office hours on +44(0) 1223 338337

If the issue cannot be resolved, you can donate online through the college website

Is there a minimum donation?

The minimum online gift amount is £5.

Can I claim Gift Aid on this donation?

Yes! If you are a UK taxpayer and have paid as much Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax as the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year, St. Catharine’s can reclaim the basic tax rate (25%) on your gift, with no extra cost to you. So, for example, your donation of £100 will be worth £125.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can also benefit by obtaining relief for the donation on your tax return. Your basic rate band is extended by the gross charitable donation and therefore increases the proportion of your income taxed at lower rates. For example, if a higher rate taxpayer (40%) donates £100 to charity, their basic rate band is extended by £125.

Can I donate tax-efficiently from Overseas?

Gifts from the USA: If you make your gift via the St. Catharine’s College Giving Day platform and select ‘Donate in USD’ you will be re-directed to the Cambridge in America online donation page (Supporting Cambridge - Cambridge in America (cantab.org) where you can make your gift. Any gift made via the Cambridge in America website will still count towards the Giving Day total and any Challenges.

Gifts from Canadian taxpayers: The University of Cambridge is recognised by the Canadian Revenue Agency as a prescribed institution under Section 3503 of the Canadian Income Tax Regulations. Please email alumni.office@caths.cam.ac.uk if you would like to request a receipt for Canadian tax purposes.

Gifts from European taxpayers: If you are a European resident you may be able to maximise your gift through Transnational Giving Europe (TGE). If you’d like to make a tax-effective gift in support of our Giving Day, the best option is to give early and let us know.
